Everyone is talking about the environment and how our behavior and neglect is leading to changes in the climate. Here at BDR we are committed to excelling the public’s expectations from retailers and manufacturers when it comes to sustaining our planets future.

BDR has now joined the Green Achiever Scheme which has been set up to help companies demonstrate their credentials to suppliers, customers and any other parties interested in greener business.

Being registered with the Green Achiever Scheme means we have made a commitment to improve our carbon footprint and implement new in-house procedures to guarantee better results, these include:

· Paperless Office

As a forward thinking technology company we know better than most that in this day and age it is easier than ever to take advantage of Document Management technology and CRM packages to combat excessive paper usage. By implementing ready available technology we have become an almost paperless organisation.

For example

Like most business our in-house processes required alot paperwork being passed from department to department we had to print and file quotes, emails, contracts and any other information used for a customer, the office was full of filling cabinets bursting at the seams.

Now with our bespoke CRM package and electronic document management all the information we need is electronically stored and can be accessed by anyone in-house. Since implementing this technology we have reduced our paper usage by 60% any paper which is no longer necessary is recycled.

· Company Vehicles

Cars have an impact on the environment in terms of air quality, green house gases, ozone depletion, water quality, use of natural resources and noise.

Ideally our dependence of cars would not be as it is today but unfortunately this is something we cannot change without compromising the services we offer.

Here at BDR we have a customer base which spans the whole of the UK which makes us heavily reliant on vehicles, however we are trying to do what we can for the environment by gradually switching all our company vehicles to Diesel which are less environmentally damaging, as they tend to have lower CO2 emissions. With car manufacturers making greener cars more of a priority hopefully in the future we will be able to do more to combat this problem.

· Wasting Electricity

The generation of electric power produces more pollution than any other single industry in the United Kingdom, data shows that the electricity industry is responsible for:

Sulfur dioxide emission that contribute to acid rain, NOx emissions that contribute to urban smog, carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change and mercury emissions that pose significant health risks.

The variety of fuels used to generate electricity all have some impact on the environment so it is important  that we do not waste any electricity generated but unfortunately businesses are the worst culprits.

We believe that it is important for everyone to play their part in reducing wasted energy so we have implemented strict in-house policies to make sure lights are not left on in rooms not in use and no electronic equipment is left on over night. We have even purchased energy saving kettles and hand dyers which use 60% less electricity.

If we all had more consideration when using electricity this problem would be greatly reduced.

· RoHS Compliant Electrical Equipment

Destroying old electrical equipment is also a concern for the environment. In recent years the European Union has dedicated a lot of time in trying to reduce the amount of restricted materials entering the waste stream these materials include lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB). The European Union has now developed the RoHS (Restrictions on the use of Hazardous Substances in electrical equipment) directive which now regulates the amount of hazardous substances used in electrical equipment.

BDR realises the importance of all manufacturers complying to this new directive so we only source equipment which is RoHS compliant.

I hope the above has given you ideas on how you can help sustain our planets future.
